With a new โMulanโTo hit Disney Plus instead of the theaters on September 4 and in direct actionโHerculesโrecently announced, nowโs the perfect time to reflect on Pandoraโs true box office remake of Disney action that has hit the screens in recent years. Although this phenomenon originated in the giant bomb โThe Jungle Bookโ by Rudyard Kipling in 1994 starring Jason Scott Lee, it did not start to the extent we see now until โCinderellaโ 2015. It has been remade updated at an ever-increasing rate and will hit the airwaves in 2019 with the release of four such remakes โ โDumbo,โ โAladdin,โ โThe Lion King,โ โLady and the Tramp,โ and โMaleficent: Mistress of Evil,โ a follow-up to โMaleficentโ 2014.
But hot: stop.
Disney movies are known not only for their beautiful animations, delightful stories and of course the childhood memories they have the power to evoke, but also for the ways in which they combine old stories and new artistic media in innovative and imaginative ways. . Which the remake is not. They are fine at best, and more often cheated and unnatural, deliberately dominating the elements that made the originals so lovely. YouTuber and movie critic Lindsay Ellis put it quite appropriately in a refreshing frank and descriptive review on the remake of โBeauty and the Beastโ 2017, a comprehensive example of this development. The film, as she emphasizes and I agree with it, is insultingly useless in its existence in that the filmmakers added seemingly calculated responses to the pedantic, logical viewers who pointed out little in the way of the plot in the original (โthe whole castle was cursed for action of a fragile ten-year-old ?? It is not LoGiCaL !!!! โ), but also kept episodes from the original. Inevitably, this collision damaged much of the planned morality of the story.
More emphasis should be placed on developing and releasing new, original material, rather than constantly, cheaply renaming old favorites to try to exploit the childโs nostalgia. Letโs hope we get to see more original material like the upcoming flicksโSaul, โRaya and the Last Dragon, โEncanto, โandโLuca, โrather than more of this beautiful mess about nothing.
