Members of the special police department were among those called to Heiðmörk yesterday after a man in his sixties was seriously injured by an old firework explosion. The incident occurred just before seven in the evening. A passer-by found a firework and most likely tried to light it when an explosion suddenly occurred, resulting in a serious injury to the man’s arm.
In a statement from the police it was written that the man was a foreigner and the lack of knowledge of the language was a significant obstacle in communication with the injured person who was taken to hospital for treatment.
On the FB website, the police reported that special units were sent to the scene to check the area. Then another unexploded ordnance was discovered that was destroyed by special bomb removal equipment.
In a post on the website of the National Police Commissioner, it was written not to let people touch or try to play with duds that can be found in many places, not just around Reykjavik. Everyone is asked to exercise caution and if a “suspect object” is found, the police should be notified immediately by calling 112.
Þorvaldur Friðrik Hallsson, manager of the Landsbjörg rescue group, told reporters that fireworks like the one found in Heiðmörk are very dangerous and life-threatening, so do not play with them.
