In the Belarusian capital Minsk, large-scale demonstrations against Alexander Lukashenko and his regime continue. Svetlana was one of everyone at Självstæðighetstorget on Sunday, where it is estimated that more than one hundred thousand people gathered.
– I came here because of the injustice, the endless lies, the media lying, a president lying. “I want change, I want freedom,” Svetlana told Reuters.
And it was a huge and loud crowd that took over Independence Square in Minsk today. They were tens of thousands, possibly more than 100,000, and shouted “Resign!” and “Long live Belarus!”.
– I think that everyone who is here in the square is afraid and that there is a reason to be afraid, because our government has shown how it can treat people, but there is hope, more hope than fear, Olga said.
Then many walked down to a large memorial to the victory in World War II. For the day, it was guarded by the Belarusian army. There was a very tense atmosphere as the military was put on standby due to the demonstrations.
Dictator Alexander Lukashenko arrived in a military helicopter.
On state propaganda television Pictures are shown of Lukashenko, a grim black-clad man armed with a rifle, as if on his way to battle. He thanks hundreds of police officers in black helmets who built barricades across a major road. They applaud.
During the evening, there will be reports that internet traffic in Minsk has begun to be restricted.
