The Irish parliament is to be convened after high-ranking politicians from two of the governing parties violated the country’s strict corona rules.
An anniversary dinner at a golf club with politicians and other prominent guests has led to a political crisis in Ireland.
The dinner was arranged in Wednesday, just the day after the Irish government tightened its restrictions on social gatherings, and was with its 82 guests a clear violation of the rules. Today, the limit is six people in one and the same company indoors, only when it comes to, for example, weddings or cultural events, you can be a maximum of fifty at the same event.
Particularly troubling for the government is the fact that several politicians from the two bourgeois coalition parties Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil attended the party, and both the Irish Minister of Agriculture and the Vice-President of the Irish House of Lords have now resigned. In addition, the country’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin has called on EU Commissioner Phil Hogan, who was also present at the dinner, to reconsider his position.
The Irish Government took office less than two months ago – yet two ministers have already resigned. The decision to recall Parliament from its summer break earlier than planned can be seen as an attempt to restore confidence in the government and its coronary restrictions – which critics have considered inconsistent.
