The disused Vridsløselille Prison in Albertslund, which is known from the “Olsen Gang”, has been sold and will be transformed into a new district with housing.
The pension fund PKA, together with the construction company A. Enggaard, has bought the plot of 160,000 squares that houses the prison.
This is stated by PKA in a press release.
The land will primarily be used to build homes in a green district. At the same time, a housing association for seniors must be built. The parties also hope to be able to build institutions such as kindergartens and crèches.
– Together with A. Enggaard, we look forward to creating a cohesive district with a focus on community, sustainability and association life, says Jon Johnson, CEO of PKA.
– It will accommodate housing for all ages, and it will contribute to the surrounding city, so that the neighbors and the association life in Albertslund also benefit from the area, he says in a press release.
Vridsløselille Prison was inaugurated in 1859, and the last prisoner left the prison in 2016. The inmates were instead transferred to Storstrøm Prison on Falster.
Until 2018, the prison was also used as an institution for detained asylum seekers.
Although the land has now been sold and the area is to be transformed into a new district, the plan is to preserve parts of the prison.
This applies, among other things, to the famous gate, where Egon Olsen left after serving his sentence in “Olsen Banden”, and Benny and Kjeld waited with flags outside.
In fact, the prison is known, among other things, for a spectacular escape operation on August 27, 1995, where a rubber goat crashed through the prison wall and made a 13-meter hole.
Subsequently, 12 prisoners fled – several of them were murderers and drug dealers. Most were given a maximum of a few weeks off before being behind bars again. One single reached abroad but was also arrested.
It was all filmed, and the episode is probably Denmark’s most talked about escape action.
