PARIS, August 29 (Xinhua) – French rising star Eduardo Camavinga scored a brilliant solo goal as Rennes beat Montpellier 2-1 on Saturday in front of around 5,000 fans at Roazhon Park to claim their first win of the new Ligue 1 season.
Camavinga, 17, was called by Didier Deschamp earlier this week to Les Bleus Nations League matches against Sweden and Croatia next week, making the Angolan-born teenager the youngest member of the French national team after World War II.
Julien Stephan took the lead 22 minutes in, as Raphinha broke through on the left and put the 1 – 0 shot just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper. Camavinga took the lead 77 minutes in, as Montpellier broke through on the left and put the 1 – 0 shot just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper.
Rennes, which finished in third place in the limited season 2019-2020, will make its debut in the Champions League next season.
Gaetan Laborde pulled a back for the visitors in the second half stoppage time but it could not interrupt Rennes victory.
Later on Saturday, Nice defeated Strasbourg 2-0 to collect two league victories in a row thanks to the Danish international Kasper Dolberg’s double.
Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will not play this weekend as their match against recently promoted Lens has been postponed until September 10.
