Last week, a Russian fighter jet violated Danish airspace near Bornholm when it followed an American bomber.
In a short statement on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod writes that “it must not be repeated”.
– I take seriously the unacceptable Russian violation of Danish airspace. It is absolutely crucial that everyone – including Russia – adheres to the basic rules of the game and international principles.
That message has been sent to the Russian ambassador today. It has been made clear that it must not be repeated, writes Jeppe Kofod (S).
Danish fighter jets were sent on the wings on Friday last week, when a Russian fighter plane followed an American bomber over Danish airspace near Bornholm.
This was stated by NATO’s Allied Air Command on Monday on its website.
The Russian fighter plane flew after an American B52 bomber over the Baltic Sea with a course towards Danish airspace.
A total of four US bombers flew over the 30 NATO countries as part of a training exercise. They were escorted by 80 fighter jets from NATO countries, including Denmark.
The Russian plane, which had taken off from Kaliningrad, followed the B52 plane over Bornholm and far into Danish airspace.
According to NATO, it is a serious violation of a NATO member’s airspace.
“The episode demonstrates Russia’s lack of respect for international standards and Allied airspace,” said General Jeff Harrigian, commander of NATO’s Allied Air Command, on Monday.
Earlier Tuesday, Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen (S) also harassed against the violation of Danish airspace.
– It is clear that violations of Danish airspace are completely unacceptable. It also means that we will soon take up this incident with the Russian authorities in order to avoid recurrences.
“Russian violations of Danish airspace have been rare, and therefore the call for Russia is also restraint in relation to the incident here,” she said.
