From now on, residents of rural areas and towns located far from the capital will be able to take advantage of cheaper flights to Reykjavik.
Minister of Transport and Local Government Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, introduced the idea at today’s meeting at Egilsstaðir airport. The project, called Loftbrú, aims to provide residents with up to 40% discount on the price of all flights on domestic routes to and from the capital.
The discount is to be provided to residents regardless of whether they choose the reduced fee or the full price. Each passenger will be able to take advantage of the discount up to three times a year for trips to and from Reykjavík (for a total of six flights).
Until the end of 2020, passengers can enjoy two flights, i.e. one trip to and from Reykjavik.
“Loftbrú provides discounts for those who are registered in municipalities away from the capital and on the islands. The Loftbrú project is open to residents of the Westfjords, Northwest Iceland, Northeast Iceland, East Iceland, Hornafjörður and Vestmannaeyjar Islands. The area is demarcated using postal codes. In total, the Loftbrú rebate conditions apply to over 60,000 inhabitants in these areas.
The project aims to improve access to services located in the capital and to strengthen these areas by making domestic flights a more efficient means of transport. The discounts offered will be available to those who want to take advantage of various services and entertainment in the capital and visit relatives and friends. Loftbrú was created for people who want to fly to Reykjavik privately, and not as part of business or other work-related trips “ informs the government announcement
In a post on Facebook, the minister wrote that the new project aims to level the situation of residents of other parts of the country. It is one of the most important regional activities that have been undertaken to enable those who live far away to benefit from the services offered in the capital.
