701 women have signed an open letter to the media industry, supporting TV host Sofie Linde’s protest against sexism in the industry.
It writes Politiken.
In the letter, the women criticize the Danish media managers for not doing enough to stop sexism in the industry.
– We are told that the door is always open. That we should go to management if we experience something cross-border. But in that call lies the whole challenge – because why are it not really the cross-border men you are talking to ?, the letter says.
The 701 signatories are or have been associated with a wide range of Danish media workplaces and have all experienced sexism in the workplace.
– It happened once. It is still happening, the letter says.
When TV host Sofie Linde hosted this year’s Zulu Comedy Galla, she told a speechless audience that a powerful media man had suggested she give him oral sex if she would make any hopes of staying in the industry.
The episode happened when Sofie Linde was just 18 years old, and in an interview with P1 Morgen, the now 30-year-old TV host explains why she chooses to come forward with her story now.
– My premise for saying what I did was to emphasize that in reality you can say no, and that everything should probably go anyway, she says in the P1 interview according to Ekstra Bladet.
At Danske Medier, which is an industry organization for the majority of the Danish media, it is taken “very, very seriously” that so many women support an open protest against sexism in the industry.
This is what CEO Louise Brincker tells Politiken.
– Over 700 signatories are many. I’m sorry to hear that, and from Danske Media’s side we will ensure that our members focus on this, she says.
