The Gothenburg City Council today decided to let the Port of Gothenburg begin work on deepening the fairway to the container port and strengthening the quay. The work will lead to imports and exports to and from Sweden becoming more efficient and cheaper.
Just over 70 percent of all Sweden’s foreign trade is transported by shipping and half of all containers that reach the country go via the port of Gothenburg.
Today, the largest ocean-going vessels can only enter the port half-loaded due to the depth of the fairway. Direct lines are important to avoid transhipment in Europe.
The price tag for now dredging four meters deeper and strengthening the container quay in Gothenburg will be around SEK 2.5 billion, where the Swedish Transport Administration and the City of Gothenburg share the cost.
The work is expected to be completed in 2026.
