On Saturday, an unusual peace was concluded at the top of the Danish People’s Party (DF), where the party’s chairman, Kristian Thulesen Dahl, has pointed to deputy chairman Morten Messerschmidt as his successor.
When Messerschmidt was appointed vice president in early August, Thulesen Dahl would not appoint him crown prince at the time. Now, however, he points to the deputy chairman as his successor in an interview with Jyllands-Posten.
It can help shut down the unrest in the party. Because it is not affordable at DF. That is the opinion of political commentator Hans Engell.
– Both Kristian Thulesen Dahl and Morten Messerschmidt are aware that if the party is to advance and they must win back some of what they lost, it requires that the two can appear in agreement, says Hans Engell.
Following the message from the DF chairman, Morten Messerschmidt has told TV2 that he is ready to go for the chairmanship when that time comes. And the fact that Kristian Thulesen Dahl did not set a time for his departure is, according to Hans Engell, unusual.
– Messerschmidt accepts the appointment, knowing that the number of crown princes in Danish politics, who never managed to become kings, is longer than Roskilde Landevej, says Hans Engell.
The question then is how long the castle peace lasts. However, Hans Engell does not believe that Thulesen Dahl’s time in the chair will be over in the near future.
– I think he will take the next parliamentary election, and if it becomes a losing case and he does not get to reverse the development, then it may well be that he slips.
– If he can regain a four-five seats, then it will also be considered a victory. But I can not at all imagine him resigning at the moment, he assesses.
The next general election must be held no later than 4 June 2023.
