A demonstration was held today in Stockholm in support of the Mongolian minority group in China. Recently, China has strengthened control in the Inner Mongolia region and protests have spread around the world.
– We are demonstrating against the Chinese regime’s new policy, which prohibits Mongols from studying their language. They are changing from Mongolian to Chinese in Inner Mongolia, says Khered Shinjilt, one of the organizers behind the demonstration in Stockholm.
About 50 people with placards aimed at China’s actions in Inner Mongolia gathered in Kungsträdgården today. Inner Mongolia is an autonomous region in northern China along the border with Mongolia.
Some of the protesters wore traditional Mongolian clothes. And it is very much the right to their language and their culture that the protests are about.
Khered Shinjilt has her mother and two sisters in Inner Mongolia, but they do not dare talk to him now, he says.
– There are very strict rules that apply in Inner Mongolia now.
So you are not allowed to talk to them?
– They are too scared to talk, because I live abroad, says Khered.
The demonstrators demanded, among other things, that the Swedish government raise its voice against China.
– We should boycott Chinese goods. We should have done that a long time ago, says the demonstrator Jens Löv, whose wife has roots in Mongolia.
