As Moses shared the Red Sea, Inger Støjberg shares the waters of the Liberal Party, but unlike the Israeli liberator, the acting president has a hard time getting everyone to follow him.
This can be seen in the debate about sexism, which has flared up again, where Støjberg believes that the debate is “going completely over thread”. This has led to a number of Liberal members dismissing her because they believe she is derailing the debate.
According to political commentator Hans Engell, this shows that she shares the waters too much to become president. She is currently acting chairman because Jakob Ellemann-Jensen is recovering from back surgery.
– The idea of Støjberg as party chairman is impossible, because she will split the party. But she does not have the ambition either, because she knows it very well herself. So there is no prospect of her suddenly reaching out for the presidency, he says.
Instead, she wants to be part of the management and have an influence, he believes.
That Støjberg divides the Liberal Party has for years been clear in foreign policy, where a large part of the party members agree with her, and a smaller part are critical.
Very shortly after Støjberg’s announcement, 22 Liberal members wrote a debate post in Berlingske, in which they directly avoided Støjberg.
Recently, Liberal profiles such as Eva Kjer Hansen, Ulla Tørnæs and Pia Allerslev have expressed themselves in a way that can be interpreted as disagreement with Støjberg.
Støjberg clearly says that no one should accept violations. But some read her statements as an attempt to derail the debate, when she also says that “even completely innocent compliments about a woman’s appearance can be construed as sexism.”
Oddly enough, Ellemann wrote a week ago that the debate is not just about “not giving a compliment anymore,” but about paying attention to sexism.
The quick reaction from the Liberal members shows Engell that the wound from the presidential showdown as well as the battle for the deputy chairman position a year ago has not healed.
– It takes very little before the wounds that are healing heal up again. Støjberg basically does not have to say much until someone feels provoked, and we are back in the old showdown, he says.
According to Ekstra Bladet, she should have subsequently sent a firefighting email. The topic is up for debate at the Liberal Party’s group meeting on Thursday.
