In the last three years, the Enforcement Officer has received more and more demands for unpaid bills. During the first six months of this year, the number of cases will increase by 11.5 percent. The size of the debt is also growing.
– What we see is that it is quick, fast and easy to borrow money, that it stems from the credit society and the transition to an increasingly digital way of conducting transactions, says Rebecka Öhman is unit manager at the Swedish Enforcement Agency.
The first six months of the year, the Enforcement Officer received 644,000 claims for unpaid debts, an 11.5 percent increase compared to last year. The number of people who do not pay their debts on time also increases, as does the total amount of debt. In the first half of 2020, the authority received claims of more than SEK 11 billion. The group of young adults aged 18 to 25 is somewhat overrepresented and especially women.
The bailiff does not yet see any major negative effects of the corona pandemic, but rather a possible positive development, says Rebecka Öhman.
– You try to do your part to keep the money quite simply. It is also the case that debt collection companies are more willing to make installment plans because they understand that it is a difficult period and that people cannot influence their situation right now, she says.
