A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook Bárðarbunga just after midnight last night. Fréttablaðið reported this morning. Several smaller aftershocks followed and the largest was 2.0 in magnitude. The quake and its aftershocks all occurred in a thirteen-minute period between five and eighteen minutes past midnight.
The most recent earthquakes of this magnitude – which also measured 4.8 – occurred in January and April this year. Grapevine reported the quake, which occurred in April.
A magnitude 3.7 earthquake that occurred in Grímsey on Friday has also been followed by smaller shock waves and a magnitude 2.9 earthquake shook the earth 13 km northeast of the island just before six this morning. Yesterday morning, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake shook the area.
