It is one of the rarities to portray a 75-year-old birther who is still at full speed in working life.
Nevertheless, this is how it is with รldre Sagenโs director, Bjarne Hastrup, who turns around on Tuesday 29 September.
He meets every day in the office at Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, and before he leaves home, he has often been on the move for a few hours on the phone.
If a journalist needs a few sharp quotes, the call should not be in vain.
Because รldre Sagen is listened to at Christiansborg and in the countryโs regions and municipalities. Also recently, after hidden footage revealed how a demented woman was treated at a nursing home in Aarhus.
If the case of 90-year-old Else has slipped into the background politically, it will be remembered by Bjarne Hastrup.
โ I can say it bluntly: The most important thing for me is that the elderly get a dignified life in nursing homes and in home care. The entire population has witnessed this not happening everywhere today.
โ There is really something to fight for, says Bjarne Hastrup.
His commitment to the conditions of the elderly dates back to 1984, when he was appointed CEO of Ensomme Gamles Vรฆrn. A few years later, the organization became รldre Sagen, which today has more than 900,000 members.
They can send a thought to Bjarne Hastrup and the other employees to secure them a place on the political agenda. From the demand for dignified and loving care in the last years of life to the elderly check, which since 2003, following pressure from รldre Sagen, has been provided to pensioners with no or only a small income.
But it is also important to remember that old age is much more than care and finances. That todayโs elderly do not have to retire to the silence at home, but can have a life full of friendships, activities and commitment.
Bjarne Hastrup himself hopes to be able to continue for many more years.
โ In my family, you have remained in the labor market until the year before you died. So did my father, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.
โ I do not feel like thinking about my date of death, and therefore I can not think about my date of departure.
Bjarne Hastrup has a masterโs degree in political science. and teaches in addition to the director job students in economics at the University of Copenhagen.
At the moment, this is happening, among other things, based on his latest book, โMajor Trends in Danish and Global Welfare at the Dawn of the 21st Centuryโ.
The book is Bjarne Hastrupโs twentieth, and like the others, it is his wife, Marianne, who has read the proofreading.
Together they have two daughters, Julie, who is a crime writer, and Cecilie, who is a teacher. The family also counts two grandchildren.
