As reported by the local media Eyjar.net, referring to the statement by the operational director of the airport at Vestmannaeyjar – Ingiberg Einarsson, all Isavia employees were dismissed. The news was confirmed in an interview with Vísir, Isavia’s spokesman – Guðjón Helgason.
Three employees with a notice period of three to six months have lost their jobs. Speaking to Vísir, Guðjón says workers will be offered jobs with fewer hours of employment.
In addition, a detailed job analysis will be carried out with the employees. The analysis is expected to be completed in October.
“There have been no scheduled flights to Vestmannaeyjar since the turn of August and September, i.e. since Ernir stopped flying. Therefore, only aviation students, private persons and ambulance planes use the airport. Due to these changes, it is clear that the opening hours are too long and the number of staff is also too large for the work they are supposed to do ” Guðjón said.
Guðjón says Isavia hopes the situation is temporary, but given the current situation, denunciations were necessary.
Earlier this month, Ernir Airline announced its decision to cancel flights to Vestmannaeyjar. Hörður Guðmundsson, the airline’s CEO, said the decision was not good for the company, but at the moment the domestic aviation market is in a very difficult position.
He added that airlines find it difficult to compete with subsidized boat travel, referring to the Herjólfur ferry between Vestmannaeyjar and Landeyjahöfn.
