There have been fewer inhabitants in the rural municipalities in the last ten years. This is shown by a new analysis from Statistics Denmark.
However, the decline could be even greater if there had not been an influx of immigrants and descendants.
Here you can learn more about the development:
* In the so-called rural municipalities, where the largest city is less than 30,000 inhabitants and there are few jobs, live about 1.2 million people.
* The municipalities consist of both larger and smaller cities and rural areas. These are municipalities such as Odsherred, Guldborgsund and Aabenraa.
* The population in the rural municipalities has fallen since 2010, which is partly due to the fact that the population is concentrated in the larger cities.
* However, an increase in immigrants and descendants limits the decline.
* Since 2010, there have been 38,500 more inhabitants originating in countries other than Denmark. On the other hand, there have been 79,000 fewer inhabitants of Danish origin.
* The largest increase has occurred among people from Syria who have come for asylum.
* This is followed by Eastern European countries such as Romania and Poland. Here is the primary reason for the stay work.
* Despite the increase, the proportion of immigrants and descendants is still lower in the rural municipalities than in the whole of Denmark.
* In the rural municipalities, almost every tenth is an immigrant or descendant, while at the national level it is about every seventh.
* This is partly due to the fact that the share in the metropolitan area is somewhat higher.
* There are about 5.8 million people living in Denmark. That’s about five percent – or 300,000 people – more than in 2010.
* 23,500 more people of Danish origin have arrived. The number of immigrants and descendants has increased by 264,500 people.
