– Bye-bye Miss American Pie. Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry.
These are lines from the mega-hit “American Pie”, which for almost 50 years has helped to describe the United States.
And a song that for many is inextricably linked with the American singer, musician and songwriter Don McLean.
He turns 75 on Friday, October 2nd.
Don McLean was born a little north of New York City to a Catholic mother and a Protestant father.
Don McLean learned early on the harsh realities of life.
A few months after the family’s first vacation together, Don McLean’s father died.
– He was a down-to-earth and hard-working man, he told about the father of The Hearld in 2018.
McLean was only 15 years old at the time of his father’s death.
It was his father’s wish that McLean should finish his high school. He fulfilled that promise when he was 18 years old.
After that, McLean decided to go the musical route.
In 1971, he made his breakthrough with the song “American Pie”.
The then young man went in a short time from being an unknown troubadour to a world-famous music star.
McLean can not even put a finger on why the song has become so popular.
– I do not know. But it is being used for so much, perhaps because it has many levels, McLean told American journalist Dan Rather back in May.
“American Pie” has been inducted into music history and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.
In 2016, McLean divorced his wife, Patrisha McLean, with whom he has two children.
