The Smyril-Line Norröna (Norræna) ferry will gain a new, more attractive appearance this winter and will increase its capacity by 100 passengers.
The ferry runs all year round between Denmark (Hirtshals) and the port of Seyðisfjörður in eastern Iceland, with a stop in the Faroe Islands. It is the only regular passenger ship in the North Atlantic.
On December 19, the ferry will dock at the Fayard Ship Repair Yard in Munkebo, Denmark, where it will stay until the beginning of March. In the meantime, a cargo ship will be hired to transport the goods to and from Seyðisfjörður. However, no passenger transport will be offered during the ferry refurbishment.
“In high season, we need a place for more passengers” – says Linda Gunnlaugsdóttir, Managing Director of Smyril Line Iceland.
In addition to the new open-air bar and other amenities overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, an additional 50 double cabins will be created. There will also be more recreational opportunities available.
Just now, with passenger numbers declining due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Linda believes that the time is right to start overhaul.
After the changes, the ferry will be able to take 1,582 passengers.
“Before the pandemic, Norræna saw a steady increase in demand. Many passengers bring their own vehicles to Iceland and spend a lot of time on the island. This is a very important customer group for the Icelandic tourism industry “ Linda says.
