The British cinema group Cineworld today confirmed that it will close all cinemas in the UK and the US indefinitely. This after the premiere of the new Bond film has been postponed further.
Cineworld, the world’s second largest cinema company, is now closing all of its 536 cinemas in the UK and 127 in the USA for the time being.
Due to the decision, there are now around 5,500 jobs in the danger zone and the company management today cannot say when they intend to reopen.
Mooky Greidinger, the company’s CEO, says he can not stress enough how difficult this decision was, but since there is currently and not in the short or medium term a steady stream of film premieres underway, one sees no other option but to do so. here.
The nail in the coffin came when it premiered of the latest Bond film was further postponed. It would have premiered in April, was postponed then and the next date was November 12, but now the Bond premiere is postponed until April next year instead.
If the pandemic and restrictions allow a premiere then that is.
And the Bond film was something that the management of Cineworld had intended would save the group from the now made closure decision.
But there are many who also mean that the government’s corona restrictions are the root of the evil for the entertainment industry. Many cinemas are open, but can only take in a very limited number of visitors who also have to wear mouth guards throughout the show.
