The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson promises a major investment in British wind power. The promise came in a speech to the Conservative Party Tories annual conference, which this year will be held online. In his speech, Johnson mainly tried to look ahead to a time after the severe covid pandemic in the country.
Rebuilding the country for the better – build back better – after the ravages of the covid pandemic in Britain, was Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s promise to his party today.
Johnson’s focus on the future was not least a way of trying to shift the focus of the political debate from his government’s many controversial actions during the covid pandemic, which also led to harsh internal criticism in the party.
The purpose of the speech was to revive the optimistic mood that existed in the party after the big election victory at Christmas time last year.
– I want you to imagine that you will come to the UK in 2030, then all the promises I now make will be fulfilled, Boris Johnson said hopefully.
One of the investments to be made is thus on wind power. In ten years, according to Johnson, British wind power will produce so much electricity that it corresponds to the need for all homes in the country. He also hopes that other environmental initiatives will lead to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of jobs.
Several of the election promises from last Christmas were also repeated. For example, 40 new hospitals, better education and investments to even out income and productivity differences between different parts of the country.
The question now is whether Johnson’s speech will silence the covid critics of his own party and Johnson’s popularity figures rise again.
As recently as yesterday, the government received sharp criticism from all possible directions after it was discovered that due to a 13-year-old computer program, the authorities had lost count of 16,000 positive covid tests and the infection tracking for thousands had thus been greatly delayed.
Johnson also reiterated that he does not suffer from any suites of the severe covid disease he underwent this spring, something that stubborn rumors, even internally claimed:
“That is obviously bullshit from people who do not want this government to succeed,” said Boris Johnson.
