Guðmundur Heiðar Helgason, information officer for the bus company Strætó, has reported that the vast majority of passengers wear masks now that the new rules have been introduced, according to RÚV. The new rules regarding the obligation to wear masks in buses came into force yesterday morning.
According to Guðmundur, the strictness between bus drivers has varied. Some drivers have denied maskless passengers access to the bus, for example, while others have been milder, simply reminding passengers to remember their mask next time. The intention is to encourage all drivers to be stricter with the rules and ensure that no one on board is unmasked.
Many complaints were received due to short notice before the implementation of the rule. Some people complained that, for example, there were no reminders about masks that appeared in the Bus app. According to Guðmundur “it is a technical implementation that [they] needs to be added. “
It is unlikely that Strætó will start offering masks or selling in carriages, as this would lead to an increased connection between passengers and drivers. Guðmundur also emphasized that infection control is the responsibility of each individual and not the driver: drivers are not in a supervisory role to monitor what kind of mask each passenger has or prevent them from removing masks when they are on board.
