It turned into an unwanted break of 38 days for the ship “Maersk Etienne” earlier this year, when the ship lay still with 27 stranded migrants.
The responsibility for the migrants was tossed around between several countries until the migrants eventually came ashore with the help of an aid organization.
Now a working group must look at how such a situation can best be handled in the future. It writes Shippingwatch.
The tanker from Danish AP Møller-Mærsk picked up the 27 migrants in Tunisian waters on 4 August, when the Malta Coast Guard asked Maersk for help.
However, neither Malta nor Tunisia were willing to accept the migrants, and therefore the Danish authorities tried to find a solution.
Eventually, the migrants were moved to the NGO ship “Marie Jonio”, which had been given permission to dock on the Italian island of Sicily.
The working group, set up by the government, has representatives from three ministries, the Danish Maritime Authority and Danish Shipping Companies.
