Minister of Justice Nick Hækkerup (S) warns of further measures against prisoner escapes after Peter Madsen’s failed escape attempt.
It happens in a post on Twitter, where he calls the case “deeply serious”:
It goes without saying that convicted prisoners who have committed the worst possible crimes should not be able to escape from the custody of the authorities.
One thing is for sure: We will launch a number of further measures against prisoner escapes in the near future, he says in a tweet from the Ministry of Justice’s profile.
The measures in question will not be elaborated. The Minister has not immediately had the opportunity to be interviewed.
Convicted murderer Peter Madsen fled Herstedvester Prison on Tuesday.
With a pistol-like object, he threatened himself out of jail. However, it was a short time in freedom when he was caught by the police again after a few minutes.
Five minutes after the prison had sounded the alarm, Madsen was arrested after he jumped into a white van.
There is no indication that the driver was aware of Madsen or his escape plans.
The Danish People’s Party’s legal spokesman, Peter Skaarup, calls the escape attempt “absolutely wildly worrying” and demands an explanation.
He says the party has a proposal on the way that lifers who try to escape must have been deprived of the right to be able to get out prematurely.
– Lifetime should and must be lifetime. Therefore, we can not benefit from the fact that a Peter Madsen can be out within 15-16 years.
Nick Hækkerup has asked the Danish Prison and Probation Service for an explanation to clarify how the escape could take place.
Last year, there was also a serious escape attempt. Here, a gang leader fled from a psychiatric hospital. He was captured in Barcelona a few months later.
The Minister points out that new security measures have already been taken after last year’s prisoner escape.
– In addition, there is an action plan on the way, where the authorities must come up with a proposal on how we tighten security further.
– It is clearly needed, it sounds from Nick Hækkerup.
