Due to the new changes in the restrictions, there were many questions and omissions related to the discrepancies in the information provided by the Ministry of Health and the chief epidemiologist. It is about opening a gym and practicing group sports. The epidemiologist suggested that, due to the constantly growing number of infections, the gym should not be opened and that sports should be prohibited outside and inside sports halls. However, after issuing new restrictions, the ministry did not explicitly order the closure of the gym, which led to many discussions.
According to the data, around 110 people have been infected with the coronavirus while using the gym or participating in other sports activities. This figure does not include derivative infections, which are likely to occur in the hundreds, officials from the Civil Defense Agency said in response to a question from the news agency.
A new regulation of the Minister of Health on measures against coronavirus has entered into force today. Thanks to it, after the closing at the beginning of the month, gyms and gyms could be reopened. According to the regulation, gyms may conduct group activities, provided that all conditions for infection control are met, i.e. the two-meter rule must be respected and quantitative restrictions introduced.
Chief epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason said at a Civil Defense Agency briefing that he thought reopening the gyms was a bad move, given that they are “the main source of the epidemic” that is currently taking place.
In a response from the Civil Defense Agency to a question asked by Vísir.is journalists last week, it was found that many people were infected with the virus while practicing sports. The largest group infection in the current wave of the epidemic was attributed to the sports club Hnefaleikafélag Kópavogur, where 55 people were diagnosed with the coronavirus. The virus then spread to 180 other people and started at least five minor group infections, including are associated with schools, gyms and bars.
Overall, at least ten group infections involving 30-50 people were detected. Some of them are related to gyms.
Currently 110 infections have been directly attributed to fitness centers and other sports activities. This does not include derivative infections, which are likely to occur in the hundreds. It revealed last week that around six hundred people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in the country’s three largest group infections.
