Stockholm [Sweden]October 20 (ANI): The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) on Tuesday said that it has banned the use of telecommunications equipment from Chinese technology giants Huawei and ZTE from the development of 5G networks in Sweden on the recommendation of the country’s military.
According to Sputnik, the decision is to make a major licensing process to select companies that will develop Sweden’s 5G network and determine the terms of their services.
According to the press release, four companies were selected – Hi3G Access, Net4Mobility, Telia Sweden and Teracom.
“PTS has decided on permit conditions that address the assessments made by the Armed Forces and the Security Service, for example … New installations and new implementation of central functions for radio use in the frequency bands may not be implemented products from the suppliers Huawei or ZTE. On existing infrastructure for central functions are to be used to provide services within the relevant frequency bands, products from Huawei and ZTE must be phased out by 1 January 2025, the supervisory authority quoted by Sputnik.
The conditions were developed in consultation with the Armed Forces and the Swedish security service “to ensure that the use of radio equipment in these bands does not harm Sweden’s security”, according to the announcement.
The Swedish security service’s review of the applications comes before the government’s spectrum auctions, which are scheduled to start on 10 November.
Sputnik further reported that in August 2018, US President Donald Trump signed a decree preventing US departments from using Huawei and ZTE networking equipment for national security reasons. In July last year, the British government said that the country’s 5G network would also be Huawei-free from January 2021 until the end of 2027.
In August this year, the United States expanded its Foreign Direct Product Rule in an effort to prevent Huawei, a Chinese technology company, from finding a way around US law through alternative chip production and the provision of OTS chips made with tools acquired from the United States.
According to a statement from the US State Department, 38 Huawei subsidiaries have been added to its unit list, which identifies foreign parties that are prohibited from receiving certain sensitive technologies.
“The State Department strongly supports the Department of Commerce’s extension today of its foreign direct product rule, which will prevent Huawei from circumventing U.S. law through alternative chip production and the provision of sleeve chips made with tools acquired from the United States. in May, which Huawei has continually tried to avoid, “said Michael Pompeo, the US Secretary of State.
As an advanced wireless technology, 5G enables real-time exchange of information at speeds above 10 gigabits per second, which is 30 times faster than current 4G networks. The new technology is the next step in the Internet connection speed and has, as experts believe, the potential to change various aspects of modern life, according to Sputnik. (ANI)
