In Beijing, the most important political meeting of the year begins today, where a proposal for China’s next five-year plan is expected to be published.
Although China has long abandoned the planned economy, the country’s five – year plans are an important political instrument for the ruling Communist Party.
The five-year plans strike Although political and economic priorities and the framework for the forthcoming plan, the 14th order, are expected to be hammered out this week when China’s 200 most powerful leaders gather in Beijing.
The plan will extend until 2025 and is expected to include investments in technology, digitization and advanced industry such as the production of computer chips.
It has also been speculated that the environment and climate issue will be a priority, after the Communist Party’s Secretary General Xi Jinping recently promised that China will be carbon neutral by 2060.
The majority of China electricity supply, on the other hand, still comes from coal power.
In addition to a five-year plan, the Communist Party is also expected to publish for the first time what can best be described as a “15-year plan” with economic goals by the year 2035.
The meeting is expected to last for four days.
