A church servant and two women were killed when a man attacked them with a 30-centimeter-long knife at Notre-Dame Church in Nice on Thursday morning.
About half an hour later, police arrived and shot and wounded a 21-year-old man accused of being behind the attack. The man shouted in Arabic “Allahu Akbar” (God is greater) against the officers when they arrived.
Against this background, the French authorities perceive the attack as politically and religiously motivated and thus also covered by the terrorism legislation. President Macron has called it “an Islamist terrorist attack”.
The 21-year-old man has entered from Tunisia. He arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa on September 20, from where he traveled on to France. Here he arrived on October 9th
He arrived by train in Nice at 06.47 on Thursday morning. At the train station he turned his jacket upside down and changed shoes before heading towards the church of Notre-Dame in the city center.
In addition to the weapon, the man brought two more knives into the church. He also brought a copy of the holy book of Islam, the Koran.
In addition to the 21-year-old man, French police have arrested a 47-year-old man who was supposed to have equipped the suspected killer with a telephone and thus assisted him in his misdeeds.
