The Unity List’s health spokesman Peder Hvelplund says that the right to free abortion is a fundamental right that all women should have.
He will now raise the proposal for Health Minister Magnus Heunicke (S).
– It is a completely fundamental right for women, which was previously had in Poland, but which is now being taken from them. And there we can not just tacitly watch one of our neighboring countries – which is even an EU member – remove such a right.
– There we should both make the right available to Polish women and at the same time sharply emphasize to the Polish government that we consider this to be unacceptable, he says.
Peder Hvelplund points out that Polish women are already applying to other countries for an abortion.
– We already know that there are Polish women who travel to Germany and Austria to have an abortion.
– And here it is crucial that we also help. But it must be something that is made available free of charge, so that we avoid social inequality, he says.
The Unity List does not yet have an idea of โโwhere the money for the proposal will come from.
A constitutional court in Poland ruled last week that abortion of fetuses with malformations is unconstitutional.
This paves the way for a further tightening of Poland’s abortion legislation.
When the austerity measures take effect, an abortion will only be allowed if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest, or if it poses a risk to the mother’s life or health.
The ruling will enter into force once it has been formally approved by President Andrzej Duda.
Many in Poland have in recent days protested massively against the tightening.
Today, fewer than 2,000 abortions are performed per year in Poland, which has almost 38 million inhabitants. The vast majority of them are performed due to damaged fetuses.
