And it arouses indignation at Danske Minkavlere, who must therefore meet with Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Mogens Jensen (S) on Monday evening to get a handle on the situation.
This is what chairman Tage Pedersen says.
The mink breeders will also meet with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the Statens Serum Institut on Monday afternoon.
– The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has thrown the industry into another crisis with pictures of dead mink thrown on the ground and rotten mink in overfilled containers. The images go around the world and ruin our work with animal welfare and the image of the industry.
– And it is a mockery of the mink breeders who have looked after and cared for their animals. The authorities seem to have completely lost control and overview of what they are doing. No one wants to have dead animals lying in piles in the courtyard, he says in a written comment.
Coronavirus has spread rapidly among mink farms in Denmark. North Jutland mink farms in particular have been hit hard.
According to figures from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration on Saturday, a minimum of 400 of the country’s 1138 mink farms will be killed immediately. This corresponds to every third mink farm in the country.
Uncertainty about the killing strategy has, however, led several mink breeders to stop work in recent days. Both the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the mink breeders themselves help with the killing work.
Also on Friday evening, a meeting was held between the mink breeders and the Minister of Food.
Here it was decided that a number of mink farms that have been affected by corona will be allowed to keep their healthy animals.
With the new guidelines, mink can be tested. This means that it is being investigated whether mink that have previously been infected have developed antibodies and are no longer carriers of the virus. In that case, they must be furred.
