One – a 49-year-old Latvian sailor – according to the indictment, threw the cocaine, which was packed in four waterproof bags, out of the ship when it was in the water off Spodsbjerg on Langeland.
Here, two of the other defendants were ready. They collected the cocaine in a smaller boat, after which they transported the 100 kilos on to Tranekær on Langeland, it is stated in the indictment.
In Tranekær, they met with the fourth defendant and packed the cocaine in the trunk of a Hyundai.
Here, however, the crime stopped when the police arrested the three men. Afterwards, all 24 sailors on the ship “Duncan Island” were arrested – including the accused ship’s officer.
They were all imprisoned, but after a week, the 23 came free again.
Prosecutors believe the drug smuggling took place along with several other unknown perpetrators.
When the cocaine was dropped in February, the cargo ship was heading for Helsingborg in Sweden and Russia. Prior to that, it had sailed from ports in Mexico, Panama and Ecuador.
One of the ports – Guayaquil in Ecuador – is known as a shipping point for cocaine. Cocaine is regularly stored with legal items such as tuna or bananas.
The court has set aside five days for the case. The last day is December 3rd.
