The older, 31-year-old brother was found guilty of several crimes, including 13 attempted murders as required by the prosecutor. The 26-year-old younger brother was found guilty of, for example, nine assassination attempts. They had both admitted to shooting police officers in Porvoo and during the ensuing rapid anxiety in Pirkanmaa.

Although the brothers confirmed the series of events, they denied the allegations of assassination attempts, claiming that their intention was not to kill but rather to get the police guns to answer the call they made to the emergency center. Even prosecutors, the judges stressed, did not claim that their goal was to kill the officials who responded.

“Respondents had only planned a robbery,” they said.

Trials or preliminary investigations failed to reveal the brothers’ motive.
