– I would like the government to take responsibility for this completely unsustainable situation, in which not only mink breeders but also their families and children have been put.
– They have from one day to the next had their life’s work destroyed, and their financial future is uncertain. We have already seen a suicide attempt.
– So we propose that the government establish a national crisis preparedness, says Marie Bjerre.
On Wednesday last week, the government decided that all mink in Denmark must be slaughtered to avoid infection with mutated covid-19 from mink to humans. This has put the Danish mink breeders in a difficult situation, as it is destructive to their business.
In addition to the mink breeders, employees in follow-up occupations across the country are becoming unemployed.
Health and psychiatry are the responsibility of the regions in Denmark.
And the North Jutland Region, where there are particularly many mink farms, has already activated a crisis preparedness.
The Region of Southern Denmark and the Central Jutland Region have also offered crisis assistance to mink breeders. But that is not enough, according to the Liberal Party.
– It is such a big and extraordinary task that the government has thrown many people into. That is why the government must also take responsibility for crisis preparedness in all regions. This must, of course, be done in cooperation with the regions.
– But this here is a national crisis affecting all regions. Which the government must take responsibility for, says Marie Bjerre.
The Liberal Party demands that Minister of Social Affairs and the Interior Astrid Krag (S) convene negotiations on the proposal.
– If the regions want to take on the task, then that’s fine. But then money must come with it. Because this is a completely extraordinary situation that the government has thrown these families and children into, says Marie Bjerre.
