The Eastern Uusimaa Police Department announced on Thursday that it was investigating the drowning of a seven-year-old boy in Porvoo from an unintentional killing.
The boy drowned in a swimming pool in the city of Porvoo last Thursday when he participated in a supervised after-school program. At the time of the event, a group of children had used the multi-purpose swimming pool as part of the afternoon activities.
Investigators say they have taken surveillance camera material from the pool and also conducted several interviews. Police said the video material provides a clear picture of the sequence of events and that they are working to fill the story with interviews.
Post-training instructors and indoor lifeguards were present at the time of the accident. In a statement issued on Thursday, police said they were investigating the actions of those responsible for security and also investigating the structural safety of buildings.
Detective Chief Inspector Tero Tyynelä said he could not say whether police had found the suspects in the case.
"At this point, it is up to the police to analyze the chain of security arrangements from start to finish. That’s what we do. This unfortunate incident has taken place in the so-called Under controlled conditions. The task of the police is to find out whether the arrangements were so-called. In order," he commented.
In a statement, police urged two women who were said to be near children in a multi-purpose pool at the time of the incident to contact them on 0295 436442.
