The verdict relates to a tweet that was published before the last European elections in May 2019. “Vote for the Finnish Party so that Finland’s future does not look like this,” read a tweet with a photo of a black couple and a child.
The Pirkanmaa District Court found that the tweet corresponded to elements of hate speech because it was not a critical contribution to the immigration or foreign policy debate and did not oppose a particular area of EU policy. Instead, the court found that the tweet only referred to the skin color of the people in the photo and stated that they should not be allowed into Finland
“Posting can cause intolerance and the text will increase contempt and, in some people, even anger based solely on people’s skin color, and can be considered very slanderous. Politician Jalonen was absolutely responsible for ensuring that his actions did not spread intolerance and increase hatred towards a particular population group based solely on skin color. ” the reading was read according to Helsingin Sanomat.
The court dismissed charges brought against a third former member of a political youth organization for a similar campaign message on Facebook.
In February, the Finnish Party withdrew from Jalonen after expressing its sympathy for Nazism. The populist right-wing opposition party later severed ties with its youth organization and founded a new one called Perussuomalainen Nuoriso.
