The Health Inspectorate wants to ban the sale of large fireworks to the public and says that it should only be used for large public exhibition permits, RUV reports.
A draft regulation published by the Minister of Justice on the government’s consultation portal proposes that the sales period for fireworks be shortened and that the public be allowed to use fireworks for only three days.
However, the Authority states in a statement that it will be difficult to enforce these regulations and experience has shown that the use of fireworks takes place immediately outside the permitted use window. The Authority therefore considers that it is best to respond by banning the private use of fireworks altogether.
The statement goes on to say that it is unacceptable for such unhealthy conditions to be created in urban areas, without restrictions, and that in the worst cases, the conditions created by fireworks are tantamount to natural disasters. The agency also wants to set limits on who can buy a number of fireworks and control the amount imported into the country.
The statement was presented at a meeting of the city’s environment and health council this week. The majority of the council was in favor of the idea and agreed that short-term entertainment did not justify a danger to the environment and human health.
Representatives of the Independence and Center parties, however, did not consider it the role of the city to make decisions about which or how many fireworks should be sold.
