Two men lost their lives late Tuesday night when a ghost driver drove out on the Herning motorway near Harlev west of Aarhus.
The accident, which was reported on Tuesday at 22.02, was triggered by a 41-year-old man from the Herning area, who was driving west on the eastbound lane.
Here he had a collision with an oncoming motorist – a 36-year-old man from Aalborg. Both men lost their lives in the accident.
– The person in question collides head-on with an oncoming vehicle, says duty officer at East Jutland Police Peter Tholstrup.
It is not known how long or why the 41-year-old had been driving in the wrong direction, but police are investigating whether any of those involved were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The collision happened at such a high speed that the 41-year-old’s car was thrown over the center guardrail and ended up in the westbound lane.
Here, his car was hit by a 49-year-old woman who came driving. Her car was damaged while she escaped with the fright.
The 36-year-old’s car was hit shortly after the collision in an eastbound lane by a 56-year-old male motorist who was also not injured.
When ambulances and an ambulance arrived at the scene, both the 36-year-old and the 41-year-old were declared dead at the scene. Both men’s relatives have been notified, police write.
A total of four people in four different cars were involved in the accident. The other two drivers escaped unharmed, as mentioned.
The motorway was blocked in both directions between Harlev and Skovby after the accident.
When the car inspector and the police had finished on the spot, the road was reopened in a westerly direction shortly after 01.30 and in both directions shortly before 03.30.
