Southeast Iceland remains covered by the Orange Weather Alert until 12:00 PM tomorrow. The rest of the country is covered by yellow weather alerts and many roads are closed or impassable. Even some residential streets in Akureyri turned out to be too snowy and icy, and police were helping people to get to work as a result.
Domestic flights were canceled this morning.
Driving conditions are difficult in all parts of the country, but particularly difficult in the north, where there is a strong snowstorm, which significantly reduces visibility.
National Road No. 1 in North-East Iceland is mostly impassable, as are the Brattabrekka, Þröskuldar and Steingrímsfjarðarheiði routes to the Westfjords. The Öxnadalsheiði pass leading to Akureyri is also closed.
Due to the difficult road conditions, Akureyri police helped residents get to work as there was snow on many streets. Reports show that it was a quiet night for the police, while snow plow drivers now have a lot of work to do.
Morning flights from Reykjavík to Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and Ísafjörður have been canceled. The afternoon schedule is still in effect, but may be canceled as the day goes by.
