– The reform of the primary and lower secondary school is a large-scale reform that never really gained a foothold because the teachers were not included, and the money was not set aside for it to succeed, says Claus Hjortdal.
– If that is the reason, I can not answer you. But at least what we did with the reform has not succeeded.
He adds that in addition to the reform, large resources have been spent on raising the level in the school – not least in the mathematics subject.
Therefore, it surprises the chairman that the students’ abilities in mathematics have decreased.
– We have spent many hundreds of millions on covering the teachers’ competence in mathematics, so it may well surprise me that the result looks like this, says Claus Hjortdal.
At the Danish Teachers’ Association, chairman Gordon Ørskov Madsen believes that methods must be found that can improve the quality of teaching.
– Our task is not to make reforms work. Our task is to make the teaching a success. And we must have a sharp focus on that, he says.
– I think we need to be sharper that every single teaching hour should have quality. Then it is less crucial how many teaching hours there are. But we must make sure that in each teaching hour we raise the students’ academic level and create commitment among the students.
He also emphasizes that teachers’ education must be in focus, and that it is important that teacher educators are responsible for teaching.
