4,700 tonnes, corresponding to about 1.5 million dead mink, are missing when the authorities have to settle the accounts for the killing of all Danish mink.
It writes DR.
According to the Ministry of Food, about 11 million mink have been killed, equivalent to about 31,000 tonnes on infected herds or in the 7.8-kilometer safety zones that were created.
It is these mink that the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has been responsible for getting rid of.
According to the ministry, 10,400 tonnes are in two large graves in Holstebro. 14,000 tonnes have been processed at Daka, which normally handles dead mink in connection with fur.
About 2,000 tons have been burned at an incinerator, while 300 tons are in the freezer waiting to be destroyed.
But according to the Ministry of Food, there are 4700 tonnes left that cannot be accounted for.
To DR, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Rasmus Prehn (S) says:
– It may seem dubious when you hear about it, but there are some mink that you do not know the number of. One can tear oneself in the hair over that it may be so.
– But unfortunately that is the truth, and that was how it was when I took over the task here as Minister, he says.
In early November, tons of mink were sent to incinerators, where they were converted into district heating.
But when all of Denmark’s between 15 and 17 million mink had to be killed, the incinerators could not sympathize.
Therefore, it was decided that part of the killed mink should be buried. The military areas in Karup and Holstebro are the first places where holes have been dug for lots of dead mink.
When the animals are placed in the ground, lime is placed around them to prevent the infection from spreading from the animals.
The many killings are due to the fact that a mutation of coronavirus has been found in the animals, which the authorities fear may weaken the effect of a future vaccine.
