The store Rangá will make menstrual products free of charge in the Scottish days, Fréttablaðið reports. This decision is a reference to a bill passed by the Scottish Parliament last month, which stipulates that the state must provide free hygiene products to those who need them. Rangá says that he believes that “menstrual products are a necessity and should be accessible to everyone free of charge”.
Ragná’s new presentation also comes just a few days after the Icelandic Parliament voted against Andrés Ingi Jónsson’s proposal to make menstrual products free for upper secondary school students and those who are experiencing financial difficulties. His proposal was rejected by only 27 votes to 26.
Back in 2019, the parliament reduced the VAT on menstrual products and contraception from 24% to 11%. Last month, however, they voted against abolishing the “pink tax” altogether.
Ragná’s decision to make menstrual products free for this short period of time will undoubtedly help those who need menstrual products. This presentation also draws attention to the larger issues of period poverty that need to be addressed and discussed further.
Scottish days, when customers can benefit from Ranga’s promotion, are from 15 to 20 December.
