Parliament also decided unanimously not to prosecute the Minister for his actions leading to the deportation of Finnish citizens from al-Hawl, Syria’s so-called From an Islamic woman and child detention camp. The Constitutional Committee held that Haavisto had breached its official duty by re-ordering a senior official for a disagreement over non-repatriation, but not to the extent that it would justify prosecution.
During the vote, the center group of the Parliament issued a statement expressing its opposition to the Green Alliance.
“The Constitutional Committee considered that Haavisto acted illegally and that the centre’s parliamentary group does not condone illegal activities. The intentions do not justify the means. Pekka Haavisto has made mistakes and he is responsible for his actions. Political responsibility lies with the Greens,” it says.
Annika Saarikko, the President of the Center, stated Helsingin Sanomat that the matter was painful for the center. The Green League, he said, was questionable and problematic with regard to the committee’s opinion, which hampered coalition cooperation and the committee’s authority.
“This was the most difficult place for the center so far during the election period. It was a matter of morality and reproach by the Constitutional Committee. “
He said the parliamentary group had a heated debate on the issue before deciding to vote mainly for the continuation of the five-party governing coalition.
“The Green Parliamentary Group estimates that Haavisto will be able to continue to perform his duties. And the prime minister estimates that the government has not lost its ability to function. Therefore, the centre’s parliamentary group considered that this was also a vote for the incumbent government, ”Saarikko explained.
The Green League has been the subject of public criticism for trying to cover up the committee’s opinion. The party, for its part, criticized the committee’s adviser assigned to the Haavisto case.
