The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has given permission to TVO, the owner of the Olkiluoto plant in Southwest Finland, to restart the OL2 reactor after an automatic emergency shutdown last week.
According to the statement published by the authority, TVO has clarified the causes of the incident and performed the necessary inspections and maintenance work.
OL2 has been in a cold shutdown state since last Thursday after warmer-than-usual water entered the reactor purge system, causing a momentary peak in the radiation measurement of the steam line that triggered the safety systems.
In its statement, STUK acknowledged that informing the public about the stop was too slow. The municipality of Eurajoki, located in the immediate vicinity of the factory, was only notified a few hours after the incident.
The connection of the OL2 reactor to the grid was delayed several times this week, but according to TVO, it will continue later this week.
