Four people were sentenced to life in prison for murder after an initial investigation.
The Helsinki District Court dismissed the murder charge against the former gang leader Keijo Vilhunendeciding that he had not participated in the conspiracy even as an accessory. The alternative series of events he presented, the court found, was credible enough to leave a reasonable doubt as to his guilt.
Both Aarnio and Vilhunen denied the allegations as contradictory during the investigation. Vilhunen confirmed that he was aware of the murder association, but added that as a police spokesman he passed all his information to Aarnio, thinking that the police would prevent the murder.
Aarnio denied receiving any information about the conspiracy from Wilhuss, claiming that his information was based on rumors at best.
However, the court ruled that he became aware of the threat to รnsal in June 2003. He also knew that the victim came to visit his childhood friend in Finland at the end of September 2003, a couple of weeks before the mid-term murder took place. -October.
โAarnioโs information about the murder association was clarified and he was aware of the suspected perpetrators,โ the judges said, stressing that he had placed the conspirations under control but neglected to report the officers who committed the murder conspiracy.
The court noted that by taking action, he was essentially taking responsibility for preventing the killing and was responsible for protecting รnsalโs life. โAarnio thus had a special statutory duty to prevent murder,โ it said.
The fact that he did not take steps to prevent the murder meant that he had to consider it quite probable that the murder would take place.
โAarnio was aware that this was a deliberate contract murder. His intentional negligence also had a causal link to รnsal’s death, โthe decision said, according to Helsingin Sanomat.
Riitta LeppiniemiAarnio’s defense counsel told the newspaper that it is clear that the defense will appeal the decision to the Helsinki Court of Appeal. โThe verdict was indeed a shock from both a defense and a client perspective,โ he commented.
Aarnio is already serving a ten-year prison sentence, which in 2016 struck him for his role in the distribution of drugs imported from the Netherlands to Finland in 2011โ2012.
