Party-happy people usually flock to the Town Hall Square in Copenhagen to welcome the new year. But that’s not how it should be this year.
Due to high infection rates, most of the space is fenced off on New Year’s Eve. This is stated by the Copenhagen Police in a press release.
– This year we must not only keep our distance from the fireworks, but also from each other, says chief police inspector Jørgen Bergen Skov.
The fence will be set up during December 30th. The site will be completely blocked off from 31 December at 4 pm to 1 January at 9.30 am.
Here you will not be able to stay on the square. Via a passage, however, it can be crossed. There is also access to the metro station.
Chief Police Inspector Jørgen Bergen Skov explains that the situation with the current infection rates is very serious.
– It is in that light that the City of Copenhagen, at our request, puts up a fence around most of the Town Hall Square to avoid too many people gathering around the celebration of the entrance to 2021, he says.
If the fence is forced, it can trigger a fine, it is stated. The police will make sure that the barrier is respected.
Chief Police Inspector Jørgen Bergen Skov encourages that the good coronavans are also remembered on the last day of the year. This applies to both the distance requirement and that you may not gather more than ten people
– This applies not only to the Town Hall Square, but also to all other places in the city, where the assembly ceiling of ten people must be taken literally.
– We will be massively present throughout the city, so that our officers can contribute to keeping distance and consideration – both in relation to the risk of infection and fireworks, he says.
However, it is not only the assembly ban that the police are focusing on on New Year’s Eve.
Under the corona, a ban on the sale of alcohol after 10 pm has also been introduced. This also applies on New Year’s Eve.
It is extended by a few hours on January 1, so it must only be sold from 9 o’clock on New Year’s Day.
