RÚV announced yesterday that more people from Seyðisfjörður have been allowed to return home. This decision was made after the Icelandic Meteorological Office assessed the situation in Botnabrún.
It was decided that the stability of the slopes of Seyðisfjörður had increased. An announcement from the National Commissioner of Police’s Civil Protection Department stated that since before Christmas no changes had been seen on the slopes.
Although many have been allowed to go home, there is still a small area in Seyðisfjörður where evacuation measures are still in force. The residents of the following streets were allowed to return yesterday:
Botnahlíð
Bröttuhlíð
Baugsveg
East Road
The evacuation originally took effect after a landslide on December 18 meant that residents did not remain at home. Further landslides occurred in the next few days and the evacuation area was expanded. This, together with the ensuing flooding, meant that some buildings were badly damaged or even swept away from their foundations.
In all this situation, attempts have been made to assist the people of Seyðisfjörður and ensure their safety. The situation continues to be closely monitored to determine when it is safe to evacuate the evacuation operations completely so that all residents can return home.
