When there are so many who have died, it is probably because there are significantly more infected today than there were in the spring.
This is the assessment of Lars Østergaard, professor of infectious diseases and chief physician at Aarhus University Hospital.
– It is the case that if you become infected with a disease that can lead to the loss of life, there will also be someone who dies.
– There is probably a higher infection pressure in Denmark at the moment than there was in the spring, and therefore there are also more people who risk losing their lives, he says.
There have also been 113 new admissions of people infected with covid-19. However, the total number of inpatients decreases by 47 people to 879 patients in total.
This is because people have also been discharged. At the same time, 42 deaths have occurred. However, it is not known whether these have been admitted to hospitals.
Lars Østergaard does not believe that the higher death rate is due to the virus becoming more dangerous or the hospitals becoming less able to treat it.
– It is not the case that we have become worse at treating patients. In fact, on the contrary. Because we now have at least two medical treatments in addition to advanced oxygen therapy and blood-thinning medication, which actually puts you at less risk of losing your life than you were in the spring.
An additional 2,249 infections have been found in the 115,491 samples that have been answered. That equates to 1.95 percent of them being positive.
This is the lowest level for the so-called positive percentage since December 24, when it was 1.82 percent.
There are 132 people admitted with covid-19 in the country’s intensive care units. 87 of them are connected to a respirator. On Wednesday, there were 136 and 87, respectively.
