Washington DC was not the only city where Trump supporters protested the confirmation of Biden / Harris’ victory yesterday, but events took place in many US cities. Sacramento has, however, attracted the attention of many Icelanders, where a Trump supporter in that city with the Icelandic flag was observed and encouraged many to ask: is this an Icelander?
Journalist Illugi Jรถkullsson was the first to point this out publicly and wrote about it Facebook. This post contained two screenshots of a live stream of the Sacramento event from Black Zebra Productions, with more screens in the comments.
After about two hours and seventeen minutes in the stream, Trump supporters and protesters can be seen taking part in the stance. Among Trump’s supporters is a man with an Icelandic flag in his backpack, who is particularly troubled by the crowd. But the big question raised in the comments of the post was whether the person in question was a countryman.
“He is an Icelander,” Illugi asserts. “He is called ‘Iceland’ several times in the video.”
Others are not so convinced. Journalist Haukur Mรกr Helgason offered the following:
“He does not have to be Icelandic, the guy. The Icelandic and Norwegian flags are both among the symbols that the Nazis in Germany adorn themselves with. Dog whistles, where more obvious coexistence is forbidden. โ
Some people rather wonder that this could be an individual of Icelandic heritage and not necessarily an Icelander. Which is not out of the question: Many Icelanders moved to North America in the late 19th century, although Icelandic communities on the other side of the Atlantic are more common in the Midwestern United States and the plains of Canada.
A number of commenters reminded others that everyone in the video participates in their democratic right to protest. Nobody objected to this, but Claudia Glรณdรญs Gunnarsdรณttir offered what many people were probably thinking: “I hope he just pretends to be Icelandic. But it’s really bad enough. โ
