The Finnish party has maintained its place as Finland’s most popular party, according to Yle’s latest monthly party survey. If elections were held now, 21.9 percent of the population would vote for a populist party led by them Jussi Halla-aho.
However, the prime minister Sanna MarinThe Social Democratic Party (SDP) was only half a percentage point behind with 21.4 percent support.
Support from both parties increased in the most recent polling season compared to the previous poll. The Finnish party grew by one percentage point and the SDP by 0.8.
"According to the view, these two parties are fighting for the top spot as the largest party and the others do not seem to be making progress anywhere," Research Director Tuomo Turja the surveyor’s Economic Research told Yle.
The Finnish party especially benefited from the order surrounding the Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (Green) on the repatriation of families from al-Hol prison in Syria, Turja added. Voting data showed an increase in party profitability after Parliamentโs Constitutional Affairs Committee said the minister broke the law, but he should not be prosecuted.
"The Finnish party was strong in these discussions. When they returned home, they knew how to take advantage of this conversation," Turja said.
The support of the Finnish party has grown steadily since August, and this is the second poll in a row in which their support has increased by a full percentage point.
The SDP was disturbed by people over the age of 50
The SDP-run coronavirus crisis helped the party strengthen its support, even though the most recent poll ended before criticism of vaccine availability became politicized.
The government’s plans to abolish the so-called However, โRetirement Management,โ an enhanced unemployment benefit system offered to seniors, led to support for older voters in the SDP.
"During the voting period, the SDP lost support to the 50-64 age group, which was particularly affected by the phasing out of the pension tube." Turja explained.
Among other parties is the opposition-led National Coalition Party, led by Petteri Orpo, remained in third place in investment at 16.2% after receiving a small increase in aid.
The Central Party, a coalition partner of the SDP government, is in fourth place, but has fallen backwards after supporting a second poll in a row. Chair Annika Saarikko he had high hopes to increase the partyโs position with voters when he took office Katri Kulmuni in September, but the amount of support fell 0.4 percentage points in the latest poll, leaving the Central Party profitable at 11.7 per cent.
Haavisto’s criticism did not affect Green’s support
Foreign Minister Haavistoโs criticism of the handling of al-Hol repatriations has not had a huge impact on support for his party among voters. The Green Parties fell by only 0.2 percentage points to 11.4 per cent.
Similarly, plans to remove the pension pipeline have not proved to be a source of dissatisfaction among Left Alliance voters, as the party increased its support by 0.4 percentage points to 7.6 per cent.
According to Turja, the background data do not show a decrease in the support of the Left Alliance among those over 50 in the same way as in the case of the SDP.
There was no major change in support for smaller parties than Movement Now, which dropped almost a full percentage point from the previous poll.
The Swedish Peopleโs Party, the governmentโs coalition partner, remained virtually unchanged at 4.3 per cent, while the Christian Democrats would get 2.8 per cent of the vote if the election were held now.
The economic survey surveyed 2,221 people from December 2, 2020 to January 5, 2021. A total of 1,504 voters revealed their party affiliations. The margin of error was +/- 2.1 percentage points.
